Indonesia fieldtrip course 2024

Are you eager to learn about the complexity of planning and environmental management problems in different socio-economic and cultural situations? Are you also eager to develop your skill sets in field research and engagement with real-world stakeholders?

If you are, then join us in Indonesia as part of the Indonesian fieldtrip course, PLAN3200/7200.

In the course you will learn how to:

  • Understand and analyse key issues and complexities relating to international development and post-development debates;
  • To reflect on the ways in which complex issues such as climate change, environmental sustainability, globalisation, poverty and inequality impact on how people can sustain their livelihoods in the Global South;
  • Recognise the complex means by which livelihoods are sustained in a developing country context;

The course consists of:

  • A compulsory information session in late April to give you the critical travel, health and insurance information plus some useful tips.
  • Pre-fieldtrip workshops to prepare you for the fieldwork and to provide you with important context to the individual research projects (compulsory attendance, planned to be in mid-June 2024, over two days)
  • Two week fieldtrip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia (dates to be confirmed, estimated: 27 June to 11 July 2024) where you will engage with students from UGM and undertake field research.

We have been running this course since 2015 and is currently coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Sonia Roitman and Assoc. Prof. Ron Johnstone

In addition to the normal course fees, the course incurs a number of costs that you will need to cover. These include your travel costs, and an additional AUD$850 (TBC) to cover your accommodation and food during the trip. Please note that if you are an Australian domestic undergraduate student, you might be eligible for a scholarship under the DFAT New Colombo Plan which covers most of these costs. We will provide more detail on this in the briefing session.

We will run a brief information session on 13 March 2024, 10am, in Chamberlain Building (35-401). In person attendance would be preferable, but we will also run the session on Zoom through this link
