Sonia Roitman speaking at ‘Governing Urban Indonesia’ book launch in Yogyakarta

Last Friday UQ|UP Sonia Roitman was invited as one of the guest speakers for the book launch of ‘Governing Urban Indonesia’ that took place at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This book has been edited by Prof Ed Aspinall and Prof Amalinda Savirani, and published by ISEAS. The book discusses the complexity of managing urban issues in a country that has rapidly urbanised. Sonia Roitman contributed a chapter that analyses the Indonesian planning system and its contribution to the discussion on Southern Urbanism.

As part of the book launch last week, the discussion highlighted the current significance of urban studies discussions in Indonesia. In the last five years, there have been four seminal books contributing to this conversation:

  • ‘Transformasi Perkotaan di Indonesia’ (Urban transformation in Indonesia) by Bakti (Bobi) Setiawan, in 2020.
  • ‘Handbook Routledge of Urban Indonesia’, edited by Sonia Roitman and Deden Rukmana, in 2023.
  • ‘Kota-kota Indonesia: pengantar untuk orang banyak (Indonesian cities, an introduction to the crowd), by Marco Kusumawijawa, in 2023.
  • ‘Governing Urban Indonesia’, edited by Ed Aspinall and Amalinda Savirani, in 2024.

The full discussion of the book launch can be seen on YouTube, available in English.
