Laurel Johnson on ABC Radio discussing perceived over-development in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland

UQ|UP member Laurel Johnson was interviewed on ABC radio Sunshine Coast to share her insights into the community’s mobilisation against perceived over-development in that part of the south east Queensland region. Laurel spoke of the significance of a recent rally of 1,000 residents at Coolum. She also spoke about the challenges associated with accommodating 191,600 residents in 87,000 new dwellings on the ‘Sunny Coast’ in the next 25 years. “To simplify the options- the Sunshine Coast can either expand outwards further into its hinterland or consolidate existing development which means ‘going up’ in density and height.” Laurel promoted an open dialogue between Council and the community to respond to what is a collective challenge for a sustainable Sunshine Coast.
