Australia at Twenty Five Million: How did we get there?

Abstract
Australia’s population is set to reach 25 million on the 7th of August. This projection is based on the estimated resident population at 31 December 2017 and assumes growth since then of:
- one birth every 1 minute and 42 seconds,
- one death every 3 minutes and 16 seconds,
- one person arriving to live in Australia every 1 minute and 1 second,
- one Australian resident leaving Australia to live overseas every 1 minute and 51 seconds, leading to
That is an overall population increase of one person every 1 minute and 23 seconds. Australia’s annual population growth sits at 1.6 per cent, slightly higher than a global growth of 1.2 per cent and the highest of the G12 nations.
Denise will review long-term demographic trends, with a particular focus on international migration and fertility, which have led to the growth of the Australian population over the last 100 years.
Biography
Denise Carlton is the Program Manager for Population Statistics at Australian Bureau of Statistics, which includes Demography and the Migration Statistics sections. Denise has over 25 years experience with ABS, is a previous director of Demography, and has worked in areas such as Labour Statistics, Social Analysis and reporting, the Measures of Australia’s Progress project, and Health and Disability Statistics. She was the director responsible for data quality at the 2006 Census. Denise is passionate about using data to tell the story of our society and how it is changing, and about how good statistical information can help improve the wellbeing of all Australians into the future.
