Mr Peter Varghese, the Chancellor of The University of Queensland (2016-present), shared his extensive experience in development planning with UQ|UP students in a course on international development in developing countries taught by Dr Sonia Roitman.
Mr Varghese’s career in public service spans 40 years and includes senior positions in foreign affairs, trade policy and intelligence. Most recently, he served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2012-2015). Previous senior appointments include High Commissioner to India (2009-2012), High Commissioner to Malaysia (2000-2002), Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (2004-2009), and Senior Advisor (International) to the Prime Minister of Australia (2003-2004).
What a treat for the UQ students to hear from the University’s Chancellor about his extensive experiences of international development planning. Not only is this a learning experience, but also a way to humanise the University’s leadership for the students who were lucky enough to attend the session. Good work Dr Roitman.
